Liberal Arts
A liberal arts education will deepen your understanding of the world, preparing
you for a meaningful career and for life.
Programs in the College of Liberal Arts are designed to sharpen your communication
skills, develop your ability to think critically and analytically, and stimulate
your intellectual development. You will learn how to learn. Our goal is that when
you graduate you will be well equipped in the fundamentals of knowledge.
We want you to be able to build a variety of careers, adapt to the many changes
you will face as those careers evolve, and be prepared to lead a richer and fuller
life.
Undergraduate Programs of Study
Anthropology
- Students can specialize in cultural anthropology, archaeology, or biological anthropology.
- The department offers six different laboratories, two field schools, and five National
Science Foundation grants that offer students opportunities for research and mentoring.

Art
- Concentrations: Art Education, Art History, Studio, Drawing, Fibers, Graphic Design,
Metalsmithing, Painting, Photo Image Making, Pottery, Printmaking, and Sculpture.
- This is one of the most comprehensive visual arts programs in the Rocky Mountain
West. Faculty have had exhibitions in the world’s leading venues, including the
Louvre Museum of Decorative Arts; Moscow’s New Tetraykov Museum; and London’s Chelsea
School of Art.

Economics
- Studies combine a rich liberal arts education with a solid grounding in theoretical
and applied economics.
- Students can focus on regional economics, growth and development, inequality, econometrics,
financial institutions, economic policy, or other areas of interest.

- Concentrations: Creative Writing, English Education, Language, Literature, and Writing.
- Students may choose a concentration in literature, education, language, writing,
or creative writing. Our high-quality teachers are continually named by graduating
seniors as having been very influential in their academic development.

public relations, advertising, personnel, sales, researching, business management,
and teaching.

History
- Concentrations: Liberal Arts and Social Studies Teaching.
- Students acquire professional skills and detailed knowledge of historical periods,
moments, nations, and processes.
- Faculty expertise and course offerings also allow students to explore a range of
topics in cultural, environmental, intellectual, political, social history, and
more.

Languages, Literatures, and Cultures
- Concentrations: French, German, and Spanish.
- Small class size in this major allows faculty to monitor students’ progress and
provide close individual attention. Students are encouraged to study abroad.
- Graduates have found careers in government agencies and international foundations;
the entertainments, travel, and transporta¬tion industries; international business
and finance, and more.

Liberal Arts
- Concentrations: American Studies, Arts and Humanities, Arts and Humanities and Engineering
Science, Ethnic Studies, International Studies, Social Sciences, and Social Sciences
and Engineering Science.
- This major focuses on the traditions and concepts of the liberal arts: knowing past
and contemporary cultures; liberating individuals from uninformed and arbitrary
views of the world; developing writing, speaking, thinking, and reading abilities;
strengthening the basis for responsible and creative participation in society; and
committing to a life of learning.

Music
- The Edna Rizley Griffin Concert Hall in the University Center for the Arts provides
a state-of-the art venue to showcase students’ talents.
- Bachelor of Music offers concentrations in music education, composition, performance,
and music therapy.
- The Bachelor of Arts in music is structured to provide a strong emphasis in applied
music, theory, and music literature with a concentration in another academic area.

Performing Arts
- Concentrations: Dance and Theatre.
- Dance: The dance technical core curriculum is based on the Russian Vaganova method.
Courses include ballet, modern jazz, and tap technique; choreography; history; pedagogy;
production; touring dance ensemble and anatomy/kinesiology. Students have many opportunities
to choreograph and perform in dance program productions.
- Theatre: The program provides a broad foundation in all areas of theatre arts. Core
courses are required in acting, graphic expression and design, technical theatre,
directing, playwriting, costume and makeup, and history of theatre.

Philosophy
- Concentrations: General Philosophy; Philosophy and Religion; Philosophy, Science,
and Technology.
- Philosophy reflects on the nature of all human disciplines and endeavors.
- The program prepares students for quickly changing job markets and for a variety
of careers, including education, law, medicine, the ministry, government, publishing,
and journalism.

Political Science
- Students study political behavior, systems, processes, institutions, and problems.
They gain a foundation for political action and for advanced study in political
science.

in private practice, journalists, and educators.

Sociology
- Concentrations: General Sociology and Criminology/Criminal Justice.
- The program provides a solid liberal arts education with strengths in the sociology
of change, policy, social development especially as related to natural resources
and the environment.

Speech Communication
- Concentrations: Communication Studies, Media Studies, Rhetorical Studies, and Teacher
Licensure.
- Students receive a broad-based liberal arts education and choose a concentration
in communication, media, or rhetorical studies.
- Internships are available at radio and television stations, cable companies, nonprofit
organizations, and more.

Technical Journalism
- Concentrations: Computer-Mediated Communication, News-Editorial, Public Relations,
Specialized and Technical Communication, and Television News and Video Communication.
- As one of only 105 nationally accredited programs in journalism and mass communication,
we provide a strong broad-based understanding of mass communication and new communication
technologies.
- The major includes a highly successful professional internship program that places
nearly 100 students each year with Colorado and national media and communication
outlets.
