College of Natural Sciences
The College of Natural Sciences invites you to experience science, not just study
it. For us, learning is far more important than teaching.
First, experience living in the Ingersoll Residential College, a community of people
who share your interest in science. Experience science, make new friends, and have
fun. Skilled and dedicated faculty members add to your experience. These scholars
share their enthusiasm and their knowledge of cutting-edge science with you. Research
is the engine that creates new knowledge, and involvement with a research project
is the ultimate experience for a College of Natural Sciences student.
Our Career Counselor will help you put your experience to work. She can help you
match your interests with a major and career in science, and direct you to internships
or summer jobs.
Undergraduate Programs of Study
Applied Computing Technology
(ACT)
- Concentrations: Computing Education, Computing Technology.
- This hands-on program combines computer programming, web development and design,
systems and network administration, and general business principles.
- The recent addition of a concentration in Computing Education enables students to
prepare to teach a broad range of computing principles including computer applications,
web development and programming, and AP computer science courses. Graduates also
serve as computing technology experts in public schools.
- Employers in a variety of fields seek graduates who become system administrators,
computer programmers, web developers, information technology specialists in businesses,
and more.
- Visit the department website for more
information.
Biochemistry
- Biochemistry majors develop an excellent background in biology, chemistry, physics,
and math with detailed under¬standing of the molecular workings of the living cell.
- Undergraduate research projects play a key role in the training of biochemistry
majors. More than two-thirds of our graduates participated in independent research
projects or internships.
- Opportunities for biochemistry majors to seek employment in the biotechnology industry
with a baccalaureate degree have increased tremendously.
- Visit the department website
for more information.
Biological Science
- Concentrations: Biological Science and Botany.
- The major offers a broad introduction to modern biology with an opportunity to pursue
a specialization of your choice.
- Our faculty have interests ranging from cell biology to ecology. Many are internationally
known.
- Recent internships included the Colorado Division of Wildlife, Amgen Biotechnology,
Poudre Valley Hospital, New York Zoological Gardens, the Denver Zoo, and marine
mammal facilities in Hawaii, Alaska, Texas, California, and Bermuda.
- Visit the
department website for more information.
Chemistry
- Concentrations: ACS Certified and Non-ACS Certified.
- Students gain a strong background in general chemistry, mathematics, and physics,
plus an introduction to the specialized areas of chemistry: organic, analytical,
physical, and inorganic.
- Certified by the American Chemical Society, the depart¬ment is ranked 12th in the
world in research and encourages students to become involved in these research projects.
- Chemistry students go on to graduate or professional schools or find employment
in biotechnology, consumer products, petrochemicals, forensics, and environmental
testing.
- Visit the department website for more
information.
Computer Science
- Computer Science students study algorithms (instructions for solving problems),
programming algorithms into computers, and the uses of computers and networks of
computers.
- The computer science department has strengths in artificial intelligence, software
engineering, networks, computer security, parallel computing, and embedded systems.
- Graduates are hired by companies that use computing to support business, science,
and engineering. Our employment rate at graduation is one of the highest at Colorado
State.
Mathematics
- Concentrations: Actuarial Science, Applied Mathematics, Computational Mathematics,
General Mathematics, Mathematics Education, Mathematics of Information, and Statistics.
- The mathematics department offers a bachelor’s degree with seven specialized concentrations.
- Mathematics is a large department with a small liberal arts school feel, and it
ranks in the upper quarter nationally in undergraduate education and research.
- Graduates have a wide range of opportunities including graduate school or a career
in research, business and industry, government agencies, teaching, and more.
- Visit the department website for more
information.
Natural Sciences
- Concentrations: Biology Education, Chemistry Education, Geology Education, Physical
Science, and Physics Education.
- This major offers secondary education licensure in biology, chemistry, physics,
and geology with courses in your concentration (e.g., biology) and in the School
of Education.
- The program includes classroom visits, practicum, and student teaching.
- There is a strong demand nationwide in high schools, middle schools, and junior
high schools for graduates with secondary science education licensure.
- Visit the department website for
more information.
Physics
- Concentrations: Applied Physics and Physics.
- Physics students gain a basic background in various areas of physics, yet have the
flexibility to plan a career in several areas.
- Students are encouraged to participate in ongoing research projects in the areas
such as lasers, optics, magnetism, high pressure physics, semiconductors, ultrasonics,
and particle physics.
- Graduates work in research laboratories and possess problem-solving skills valuable
in atmospheric science, medicine, geophysics, aeronautics, and the computer industry.
