Colorado Residency Documentation

Helpful Websites for Residency Information

Though it is not necessary, it may be helpful to review the Residency website for information about residency requirements. The website includes information for minor applicants interested in demonstrating emancipation.

Certain populations of applicants may qualify for exceptions to the one-year domicile requirement or may be eligible for certain military benefits. Applicants who may be able to demonstrate compliance with one of the exception categories should select “Yes” to the residency question in the application and should complete all residency prompts to the best of their ability in addition to following the petition instructions posted on the Residency website.

Documentation Necessary to Demonstrate Residency

IF you are claiming Colorado residency to be considered for in-state tuition classification, you will be required to provide documentation on your application for admission.

Undergraduate Applicants UNDER 23 YEARS OF AGE: provide the following information for yourself AND your parent/legal guardian.

You can include parent information even if you do not live with or have regular contact with that parent, as long as they are willing and able to provide you with the specific information requested in the application. *

All Graduate Applicants (regardless of age) and Undergraduate Applicants 23 YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER: provide the following information for yourself only.

  • Dates of physical presence in Colorado
  • Dates of extended absences from Colorado
  • Last two (2)^ years Colorado income taxes have been filed
  • Dates of employment
  • Current Driver’s License: state, number, and date issued
  • Previous Driver’s License (immediately preceding current): state and date issued
  • Last two (2)^ years Colorado motor vehicle registration
  • Date of Colorado voter registration
  • Date of purchase of property in Colorado (if applicable)
  • Dates of military service (if applicable)

*If you have a legal guardian, you must submit a copy of the court order appointing legal guardianship with the documents you mail to complete your application.

Married students under age 23 should NOT submit parent/guardian information; however, be sure to include spouse’s contact information.

^Length of connection to the state of Colorado can demonstrate the intention to make Colorado a long-term/permanent home. Even though 12 months is the minimum connection necessary, it is very common for the 12 month period to span two calendar years; thus, two years of information is required.
