When the fall chill settles in around Colorado, the leaf peepers come out for rich-hued weekend mountain drives and sweater-laden explorations. But when you come to CSU, you don’t need to hit the mountain roads to find some of the most-stunning autumn colors. Fort Collins takes center stage every fall with deep reds, oranges, and yellows that you can see on and around campus. Here are some can’t-miss locations right here in town.
#1. The Colorado State Oval
The best place to start leaf peeping in Fort Collins is undoubtedly right here at Colorado State University. The towering American elm trees put on their fanciest yellows, oranges, and reds to blow any fall-loving person’s mind.
#2. Old Town Fort Collins
You can’t have a Fort Collins fall experience without a trip to Old Town. We suggest you grab a hot drink at a local coffee shop, then take a stroll around Old Town while the crisp air settles in and leaves fall softly around you. Enjoy the view from one of Old Town’s benches, near the fountains in the square, or while you explore the local shops.
#3. City Park
Pull up a blanket and plant yourself on the soft grass of City Park, located just west of Old Town. With its mix of evergreens, maples, oaks, and elms, the foliage in City Park is sure to bring you the perfect mix of leaf peeping, bird watching, and the serene fall vibes every autumn lover cannot resist.
#4. Mountain Avenue West
Just a block north of city park is one of Fort Collins’ best leaf-peeping locations — and one that often gets overlooked. This quiet, historical street is lined with massive trees that put on a top-tier show every fall. But that’s not all … the center of Mountain Avenue West boasts a grassy strip with a working trolley you can hop on to cruise up and down the street while you take in the falling leaves, the stunning historic homes, and all the autumn vibes you can handle.
#5. McMurray Natural Area
Want to take a detour away from the pavement? Fort Collins has a host of natural areas to choose from, but we recommend checking out McMurry Natural Area, just northwest of Old Town. This massive reserve boasts miles of trails through mature deciduous trees. You’ll also find prime spots for bird watching, fishing, and animal watching. There’s nothing like taking a walk through the woods while the leaves fall and spotting a fox family playing in the distance.
