Starting your college journey means you’ll probably run into words you don’t recognize or understand very well. That’s normal! We’re here to break it all down for you in the College Knowledge Basics series, specifically how and why these definitions matter at Colorado State University.
Going to college can often mean everything is bigger: some classes get bigger, the student body is bigger, your academic options are bigger … and, of course, the athletics and sports are bigger. At Colorado State, we’ve got a massive Division 1 athletics program, but did you know you’ve got options to participate in sports even if you’re not joining one of our D1 athletic teams? Settle in to learn about sport clubs and intramurals at CSU.
#1. Colorado State Athletics
If you’re just starting to explore college, CSU’s competitive athletic teams are probably what you think of when we talk about college sports. These are the big-ticket teams with athletes that are often recruited by coaches and brought to CSU to compete with other universities of our size. There are five men’s teams and nine women’s teams, all with successful, trained student athletes. As a student, you’ll have free access to almost all campus games, complete with a student section where you can cheer on the Rams with your buds.
#2. Sport Clubs
Maybe you aren’t one of CSU’s D1 athletes, but still want to be on a competitive team, travel around the nation for games, and train with your team … we’ve got just the ticket with CSU Sport Clubs. Sport Clubs are student-managed competitive teams who work together to raise funds, manage budgets, select coaches, and more. Sport Clubs are a great alternative to the big-time college athletics that only take so many athletes and have elite-level standards, plus CSU Sport Clubs have a lot more options! Alpine Ski team, Logging Sports, Women’s Rugby, Triathlon, and so much more. Informational sessions are held at the beginning of the fall semester, and each team has different procedures for recruitment, tryouts, and dues.
#3. Intramural Sports
CSU’s Intramural Sports, which you’ll often hear referred to as IM sports, are similar to competitive sports, but less high stakes, more inclusive, and more accessible if you just want to play on a team. Some IM sports teams even offer competitive and non-competitive options. IM sports are open to all CSU students, faculty, and staff, and are a great way to meet peers you might not normally interact with. You can play one sport or several, and types of sports vary semester to semester. Expect options like sand volleyball, badminton, pickleball, spikeball, tennis, basketball, and more!
Bonus: Other fitness options
Not interested in a full team commitment but still want to get your move on? CSU’s Rec Center has tons of options for fitness classes, weekend outdoor excursions, and even some good times in the aquatic center.
When it comes to sports — be it cheering on the team, joining a team, or just playing for fun — your options certainly are bigger at Colorado State. No matter which way you go, there’s always a way to join in and keep moving.
