Trying to dig a little deeper into Colorado State’s majors, just starting out in your major search, or want to see what it looks like to be a student in a certain major? Our “3 reasons” series is the perfect place to start. In each installment, we’re bringing you three standout reasons to choose a major, written by the people who work and teach in those majors every day.

Learning another language is about more than communicating across borders. CSU’s Languages, Literatures, and Cultures major combines language proficiency with the study of culture, history, literature, and everyday life, helping students understand how people around the world communicate, create meaning, and approach shared challenges. The major offers multiple language tracks and opportunities to connect language study to professional interests. Here are three reasons CSU’s LLC major might be for you.

#1. Choose your language — and make the major your own

CSU’s LLC major offers tracks in American Sign Language, Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Russian and Spanish, giving students multiple paths to develop language and intercultural skills. Students can also connect their studies with interests across business, science, health, education and the liberal arts.

#2. Put your language skills to work

Every LLC student completes a capstone that connects their learning and research with professional opportunities and career preparation. You can also pursue specialized options that connect your language skills to your career goals. Through Spanish for Professions, students connect language learning with fields such as healthcare, criminal justice, and animal health, building the skills and cultural understanding to communicate across languages in the work that matters to them.

#3. Learn a language by experiencing a culture

Language learning at CSU extends beyond vocabulary and grammar. Through study abroad, internships, translation projects, language clubs, cultural research, and coursework in literature, media, history, and everyday life, students learn to navigate different perspectives and communicate across cultural contexts.

Whether you want to work across borders or engage more effectively with multilingual communities closer to home, the Languages, Literatures, and Cultures major can add a global dimension to where you go next.
