Whether it’s a new schedule, opportunities to make new friends, or finding your major, getting ready to go to college can be an adjustment. So many emotions! Watch these TV shows to embrace the fun, excitement, and everything in between when it comes to going to college. You might be surprised by the lessons you learn.
#1. Never Have I Ever
This coming-of-age story follows a 15-year-old Indian American girl, Devi, as she navigates difficult situations in high school. Never Have I Ever covers topics like grief, relationships, and identity. As the main characters are on the verge of graduation and waiting for college acceptance, the nervousness about getting into their desired schools becomes real.
As Devi and the rest of the cast learn more about themselves, they find out what they want to do after graduation. That experience makes this a relatable show to watch before coming to college because college can be a place where you continue that self-discovery.
#2. What We Do in The Shadows
What We Do in the Shadows is a TV show based on the movie by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi. This mockumentary shows the lives of vampire roommates Nandor, Laszlo, Nadja, and Colin Robinson as they navigate modern society with the help of Guillermo, a loyal human familiar. As you continue to watch you will notice the characters’ differing personalities, which makes their living arrangements interesting.
Much like this show, in college, you can experience different living situations with roommates. We couldn’t imagine a worse roommate than an energy vampire, and we hope finding a roommate is an enjoyable experience.
#3. Community
Community college can be a good way to start your academic path, whether you are getting a jump on college credits or taking classes to transfer to another school. Community is set in Greendale Community College, a fictional city in Greendale, Colorado. You learn about this not-so-average community college from the ridiculous characters in a Spanish study group. You’ll see the group take courses with kooky professors and participate in over-the-top campus-wide events.
As they get to know each other, they find out that college is where you can find your people. College is an opportunity to find your community.
#4. Reservation Dogs
This coming-of-age story is about four Indigenous teenagers in a small town in the Muscogee Nation, in Oklahoma. The four—Bear, Willie Jack, Elora, and Cheese—spend a lot of their time within their community as they mourn the death of their friend Daniel. Daniel’s dream was to move to California. So, to honor Daniel’s memory, the four set off to visit California. Along the way, they learn what they want in life, and that changes the direction they want to go in life.
This story is a good reminder that, in anything in life, the journey can be more important than the destination. College is no different. You may be surprised by how much changes from the moment you apply for admissions to everything that comes after.
