Adventure awaits: exploring Colorado State’s outdoor programs

Two students gear up for rock climbing.

Less than an hour from the Rocky Mountains. Three miles from a massive (7 miles long!) freshwater reservoir. Filled with trails, bike paths, and open spaces. With all these options, coming to Colorado State University is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream (and an aspiring outdoor enthusiast’s best opportunity to learn). But if you’re not sure where to start, CSU’s Outdoor Programs are here to guide you, teach you the ropes, and inspire your adventurous spirit.

Here’s what you can look forward to when you explore with us:

#1. You can choose your adventure

Housed in CSU’s Campus Recreation department, Outdoor Programs provides different trips every semester and 2-4 trips each weekend. The cost varies (usually $10-$80, depending on the type of activity and location), and covers everything you need, including equipment, transportation, lodging, and trained expertise. You can also request accommodations should you need them. Most trips can help you if you’re a beginner, and provide enough freedom if you’re more advanced, too. Examples include:

  • Day hikes in the mountains
  • Rock climbing
  • Backpacking
  • Backcountry, cross-country, and downhill skiing
  • Canyoneering in Utah (takes place during fall break)

#2. You can learn skills and safety in free outdoor classes

A plethora of free classes are open to Rams, with everything from beginner basics to advanced techniques. Topics include:

  • Avalanche awareness and safety
  • Wilderness medical training
  • Backpacking basics, including how to pack for overnight trips
  • Bouldering and rock climbing

These classes are perfect for anyone looking to feel more confident and capable in the great outdoors, or those who want to be able to provide medical assistance and safety in the backcountry.

#3. You can rent most outdoor gear for next to nothing

For under $30 per semester, you have access to all the gear you’ll need to begin exploring on your own. Outdoor gear can get expensive fast — especially if you’re going camping, hiking, or cross-country skiing — so the gear rental program is crucial for both beginners and seasoned explorers.
