Nursing is a career that is in high demand, and offers long-term job security, good pay, and lots of options to diversify how and where you end up. Nurses make up the largest single group of health-care professionals in the United States, which means no matter where you take your skills, there is always a job waiting for you. Building a strong foundation before you enter nursing school is an important step into the nursing profession.

CSU offers Pre-Nursing as a concentration option in three different majors — all housed within the College of Health and Human Sciences

Pre-Nursing at CSU: The what, the where, the how

Think you might be made for the diverse, in-demand career of nursing? CSU’s Pre-Nursing concentrations are designed to help create a strong foundation for students who hope to be pursuing nursing school and careers in nursing after their time at CSU. But, beyond being designed to meet nursing school prerequisites, the three Pre-Nursing concentrations at CSU offer you three distinct pathways to that goal, each aimed at building different skills alongside the core nursing prerequisites.

Three CSU majors … three different pathways to Nursing

CSU takes a new approach to preparing you for nursing school by placing the program within three distinct health-focused majors. You can choose your pre-nursing track based on the foundational science and the path you hope to take after college. Having a full, health-based degree under your belt alongside your nursing prerequisites opens up a world of options to you post-college, including nursing school. It also gives you options to enter other health- and wellness-focused careers, such as physical training, dietetics, health counseling, and so much more.

Pre-Nursing within the Nutrition Science major

The Pre-Nursing concentration within the Nutrition Science major is best if you hope to understand how food and metabolism influence health, and if you hope to combine your nursing education with a foundation in advanced nutrition and dietetics. You’ll be prepped to enter nursing school with a nutrition-focused background and a desire to help people improve their health through evidence-based practice.

If you enter the Pre-Nursing program under the Nutrition Science major, you can expect to leave with your nursing prerequisites as well as a comprehensive knowledge of nutrition’s role in health outcomes.

Pre-Nursing within the Health and Exercise Science major

The Pre-Nursing concentration within the Health and Exercise Science major is best if you hope to explore how the body moves, heals, and performs, and you hope to combine your nursing education with applied human science. You’ll take a hands-on practical approach to health and care, and learn to support lifelong wellness through movement and prevention.

If you enter the Pre-Nursing program under the Health and Exercise Science major, you can expect to leave with your nursing prerequisites as well as an education in biomechanics, physiology, and health behavior, complete with the skills to promote recovery, prevent disease, and improve quality of life.

Pre-Nursing within the Human Development and Family Studies major

The Pre-Nursing concentration within the Human Development and Family Studies major is best if you hope to study health through human development across a lifespan. You’ll learn to understand the systems of the family, of relationships, and environments, focusing on prevention, mental health, and community-based healthcare.

If you enter the Pre-Nursing program under the Human Development and Family Studies major, you can expect to leave with a systems-based degree in development, psychology, and family health. You’ll combine your nursing prerequisites with coursework that allows you deep insight into how people grow, change, and heal.
