With all the things you have to consider as you prepare for the move to college, you may not have considered what technology you might need to succeed at Colorado State. While there’s no broad requirements for what to bring, we have some tips that might help you as you navigate your college tech needs, plus some ways to save.
Despite these tips and recommendations, you should know that if your current technology isn’t up to snuff, you DO NOT need to purchase any new technology or upgrade your systems to get a stellar educational experience at CSU. You’ll have a plethora of labs, equipment, and software available to you for use around campus, and even to rent. Most required software is covered with your student fees, and can be downloaded onto your current computer, or accessed remotely if needed.
#1. Check with your major/department for specifics
If you’re already admitted to a specific major, and you know you’ll start at CSU in that program, we recommend reaching out to your department advisor for specifics on what technology you might need. For example, an engineering program may prefer a certain computer operating system or software to best serve your needs as a student, but the English major may be more flexible with its technology requirements. Some programs have a little more technology guidance on their department pages, such as the College of Engineering and the Interior Architecture and Design major.
Generally, you can expect to get by with the computer/operating system of your choice, but it’s always good to check with your program if you’re considering investing in a new system. As a whole, the university utilizes Microsoft (Microsoft 365, Teams, etc.), so if you’re comfortable with a PC (rather than an Mac), that may be your best bet.
#2. Explore now, buy later
If you do want to upgrade your technology for college, we encourage you to wait until you get to CSU. As a student, you’ll have access to special student discounts on everything from software to entire computer systems. RAMtech offers discounted pricing on qualifying computers and tablets, including Apple, Alienware, Dell, HP, and Microsoft. Discounts can range anywhere from $50 to $200 off the manufacturer’s price, depending on the product selected. Want a product not listed on the RAMtech website? You can fill out their interest form here. CSU students also get deals on AppleCare+, which covers your MacBook for damages during your time at CSU.
Beyond offering new computers and tech accessories, RAMtech can help you get your discounted software onto your computer, and help you install programs if your classes require specialty software (which is typically free/already covered in your student fees). And, if your tech fails you, RAMtech offers repair services and troubleshooting to help you out in a bind.
Once you’ve made your enrollment deposit, met with your advisor, and registered for your classes, you can charge technology to your student account (as early as the second week of July for fall-entering students. If you plan to enter CSU in spring, the timeline will vary). If you have yet to meet with your advisor and register for classes, you’ll need to do that prior to purchasing on your student account. Purchases that are charged to your student account will go onto your CSU bill, rather than requiring up-front payment.
3. Techy tips and tricks to keep in mind
- Ensure you’ve got a good battery that can last through a day of note taking, emailing, and trips around campus as you attend labs and classes.
- If you do plan to purchase a new computer, look for something ultra-portable and lightweight so you’re not weighed down on busy days.
- Invest in good accessories. A fresh charger/charging cord, headphones, and other essentials can make or break a crazy day at college. Make sure you’ve got stuff that holds up and can take a beating.
- If you wait until you get to campus to buy new tech, ask your professors and classmates what’s worked best for them. You’ll likely get steered in the right direction on brands, software, accessories, and beyond.
