Mathematics Major

Have you always been a numbers person? See where that can take you with mathematics.

At a glance

Majoring in mathematics allows you to explore numbers, shapes, probabilities, and ideas. Mathematics is valued for its precision and elegance and is also an essential source for scientific endeavors. In this major, you’ll take core courses like calculus, matrices and linear equations, advanced calculus, abstract algebra, linear algebra, computer programming, and statistics, and you’ll be able to choose from six concentrations to focus your studies further.

Concentrations

A concentration allows you to specialize in a certain area within your major, offering a depth of information and hands-on experiences that you may not otherwise get. Many students in this major will concentrate in one area to work in a specific field after college, as well as find mentors and internships before they even graduate.

Actuarial Science

You’ll train in the use mathematics, statistics, and economics to analyze and plan for uncertainties and risks. You’ll also be qualified to take the first two credentialing actuarial examinations.

Applied Mathematics

You’ll focus on the application of mathematics in other disciplines. In particular, you’ll receive training in numerical analysis, mathematical modeling, statistics, and computing.

Computational Mathematics

You will focus on computational methods, cryptography, and quantum computing, providing you an introduction to mathematical algorithms and solution procedures. You’ll learn to model phenomena choosing appropriate mathematical techniques.

General Mathematics

This concentration is perfect if you want to combine mathematics with other academic areas, such as business, law, computer science, or statistics. Accelerated degree option available.

Mathematics Education

The Mathematics Education Concentration is designed to prepare students to teach mathematics through the high school level, including Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate courses. Accelerated degree option available.

Some Career Options

Depending on your mathematics focus, you’ll graduate with career options that range from traditional to “I had no idea math could get me here.” You’ll be prepared for a wide variety of occupations in business, industry, government, and education. Actuarial science graduates who have passed the first two professional actuary exams can expect to find positions with excellent entry-level salaries. Applied mathematics graduates continue to find employment opportunities in government and private industry. Many pursue advanced degrees in mathematics, computational science, or engineering.
