Trying to dig a little deeper into Colorado State’s majors, just starting out in your major search, or want to see what it looks like to be a student in a certain major or concentration? Our “3 reasons” series is the perfect place to start. In each installment, we’re bringing you three standout reasons to choose a major, written by the people who work and teach in those programs every day.

The CSU Zoology major in the College of Natural Sciences focuses on the scientific study of animals. Students who study zoology develop a fundamental understanding of animal life, from animal characteristics to ecosystem science. Here are three reasons why the zoology major might be for you.

#1. You’ll get a unique degree with career and grad-school options.

Studying zoology will give you a deep understanding of the animal world. Our students have used that knowledge and the skills they learned here to pursue graduate degrees and careers that include zookeeper, animal trainer, wildlife biologist, research technician, veterinarian, and more.

#2. You’ll get chances to study all over the world.

CSU Zoology majors gain hands-on experience by not only learning concepts in class, but going beyond our campus to study biological concepts in the natural world. You’ll get to choose between a variety of study-abroad programs during your time in the major, including studying dolphin behavior in Honduras, wildlife management in Tanzania, and marine conservation in Turks and Caicos.

#3. You’ll find a supportive community with other science-based majors.

Student clubs and organizations are a great way to connect with other majors both in and out of your field of study. The College of Natural Sciences has more than 20 student clubs to choose from, including the Zoology Club, which is aimed specifically at zoology majors who may or may not be pursuing a veterinary career. Joining a student club is a great way to find study partners, friends, and explore your opportunities for internships and future careers.
