Trying to dig a little deeper into Colorado State’s majors, just starting out in your major search, or want to see what it looks like to be a student in a certain major? Our “3 reasons” series is the perfect place to start. In each installment, we’re bringing you three standout reasons to choose a major, written by the people who work and teach in those majors every day.

The English major at CSU is a vibrant community, and offers five concentrations to narrow your academic focus and explore your interests further. From histories of language to the writing of a poem, from books that change the way you see the world to the rhetorical forms that help shape it, and the chance to teach these things to others, English at CSU gives you multiple ways to forge an important educational experience. Here are three reasons to take a deeper look at the major.

#1. You’ll have teachers who truly love to teach.

No matter which concentration you choose, you’ll find teachers whose highest priority is you. We create classes attuned not only to your needs and interests, but also toward many of the most-pressing issues in our world today. We’re here to help you find honest, creative, meaningful ways to consider the issues you want to address and to give you a host of language and literary skills to help you do so.

#2. You’ll get learning opportunities far beyond your classes.

Beyond the classroom, there are many ways to connect with the community through internships, community literacy, publishing, and working in public schools. The Creative Writing Reading Series will bring you in contact with some of the most-important and diverse writers working today. We even have an English Club where you can play word games, relax with others who share your interests, study and share knowledge, and pursue other word-y pleasures.

#3. There are more career options than you realize.

We’ve heard the rumors, too — that studying English doesn’t lead to many career options. We’re happy to say that isn’t true! Our alumni have careers as lawyers, doctors, directors of English language schools abroad, educators in secondary schools and universities, and more. Leaders in professions and industries of many kinds are looking for you. They know that English majors possess the central skills to make any job work: how to listen, how to write, how to analyze and critique, how to collaborate, how to be creative. A faculty devoted to mentoring will help you discover career paths, and partnering with CSU’s Career Center will help you take those first happy steps to life after your degree.

We’d love to talk with you, answer questions, discuss your interests. Don’t hesitate to reach out to set up some time to chat.
