Trying to dig a little deeper into Colorado State’s majors, just starting out in your major search, or want to see what it looks like to be a student in a certain major? Our “3 reasons” series is the perfect place to start. In each installment, we’re bringing you three standout reasons to choose a major, written by the people who work and teach in those majors every day.

Understanding today’s world means understanding how cultures, economies, politics and people connect across borders. CSU’s International Studies major gives you an interdisciplinary education for understanding and interacting among diverse cultures and peoples, while allowing you to focus your studies on a region or take a broader global approach. Here are three reasons International Studies might be for you.

#1. Study the world from more than one perspective

International Studies brings together different ways of understanding the people, cultures, and forces shaping our world. Students build global and intercultural knowledge while learning to recognize assumptions, interpret different perspectives, and engage thoughtfully across cultural contexts.

#2. Focus on the part of the world you want to explore

Shape the major around your interests through four region-specific concentrations and one global concentration: Asian Studies, European Studies, Latin American Studies, Middle Eastern/North African Studies, or Global Studies. Each provides a path for developing deeper global or regional expertise.

#3. Turn your global interests into a professional path

International Studies can connect interests in areas such as public policy, economics, communications, and nonprofit work with global and regional expertise. Students can build experience through their studies, work abroad, and internships, and may also pursue an accelerated path to earn both a B.A. and Master of Public Policy and Administration in as little as five years.

Whether you see yourself working internationally or tackling challenges that cross cultures and borders closer to home, International Studies gives you the perspective and skills to understand a connected world — and find your place in it.
