How do I complete the FAFSA?

Going to college is one of the most important investments you’ll ever make. Making sure you find the right financial fit is key, and filling out the FAFSA is an important step.

After you’re admitted to Colorado State, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to get started on your path to receive federal and state financial aid including grants, scholarships, work-study, and loans.

What is the FAFSA?

Simply put, the FAFSA is a form that students and families can fill out every year that helps determine their eligibility for some financial aid. While it isn’t required that every student submit it, it is highly recommended. Even if you don’t think you’ll need the aid or you’ll be eligible, the FAFSA sometimes is required for other scholarships or programs that you might be interested in. While undocumented college students are not eligible for federal financial aid, CSU and the State of Colorado have other financial opportunities.

Is there a deadline?

Students are encouraged to submit it before March 1. The application opens on October 1, and the sooner you submit yours, the sooner you will receive your financial aid.

How do I fill it out?

Filling out the form can be quick and easy if you have the right materials ready to submit. You’ll need a few things like your or your family’s tax information and your social security number. See a complete list of materials needed.

You can choose to fill out the FAFSA with your last available tax information (i.e. if you are applying for the 2019-20 academic year, you can use 2017 tax information). You’ll be guided every step of the way once you’re in the application.
