In each installment, we’re bringing you three standout reasons to choose a major, written by the people who work and teach in those majors every day.
The Health and Exercise Science major emphasizes the importance of physical activity and how it connects to promoting health and wellness and preventing disease in humans. In the program, you will experience a wide variety of science-focused health courses. Through practicums, labs, access to internships and community health programs, you will gain the skills you need to succeed. Here are three reasons why Health and Exercise Science could be an exciting next step for you.
#1. You’ll have two distinct concentrations to choose from.
Within the major, you can choose from two concentrations: Health Promotion or Sports Medicine. The Sports Medicine concentration is a pre-health program for students who want to go on to graduate or professional school. If you are interested in a career as a physician, physical therapist, occupational therapist, physician’s assistant, or other medical career, Sports Medicine is the program for you. If you aspire to go straight into your career in the field, the Health Promotion concentration will prepare you for jobs in health settings such as corporate health and wellness, sport-specific strength and conditioning, and cardiac, pulmonary, and cancer rehabilitation.
#2. You’ll get hands-on experience in the field while you learn.
A big part of the Health and Exercise experience is learning in the field. Health Promotion students have two practicums and an internship opportunity within the curriculum to develop skills and gain relevant field experience before graduation. Sports Medicine involves in-depth labs that teach you about exercise science. Whichever concentration you choose, you will have access to the state-of-the-art Human Performance Clinical Research Laboratory, and you can get involved with community health programs, research, and outreach experiences within the department. You can also join the Health and Exercise club, where students collaborate on projects, community opportunities and learning events that enhance their studies. Joining the Health and Exercise Learning Community is also a great way to connect with your fellow students by living and learning together in the residence halls.
#3. You’ll work with professors and staff who want you to succeed.
Throughout the Health and Exercise program, you will have direct access to extraordinary, caring faculty who are experts in their varied fields. They present at national and international conferences and maintain involvement in research, which guides their work and teaching. You will also have access to our dedicated advising team, which will help you craft your courses to your desired goals and guide you through the program. We make sure you receive updated, dynamic classes and skill development, so you are equipped with knowledge and techniques necessary for your career or future graduate program.
