4 majors for tech-savvy creatives

These days, it can be hard to find an industry that technology doesn’t touch, be it computerized software, automated machinery, and even teaching. But are you hoping to find an academic path that provides a tech-forward education and keeps you on the creative path? Never fear, at Colorado State, you’ll find majors that are highly creative, but utilize software, technology, virtual reality, and beyond to help you express yourself and make inspiring things in the world. Here are four majors for tech-savvy creatives like you.

#1. Art. B.F.A. (Graphic Design or Electronic Art concentrations)

Within the Art (B.F.A) major, you’ll find 10 creative concentrations, but two of them blend creativity with technology to help you find your sweet spot. Graphic Design allows you to explore and master skills in digital and print design using highly capable programs like Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and beyond. Electronic Art takes a deep dive into experimental video and animation techniques, as well as using software as a creative outlet.

#2. Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning concentration)

Creatives in the Computer Science major? Oh, yes. It can be argued that nearly every aspect of Computer Science requires a creative brain to think outside the box and problem solve within the ever-growing world of computer technology, but the Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning concentration requires a deeper creative desire to help create intelligent systems that perceive and respond to the world around them. In essence, you’ll be tasked with creating a simulated creative being and that is perhaps a whole new demand within the creative realm.

#3. Interior Architecture and Design

Think designing spaces is all wallpaper and fabric swatches? Think again. The Interior Architecture and Design major goes so far beyond that stereotype, starting with Interior Design virtual reality staging. You’ll use a variety of intensely technical software programs as you learn to create and design thoughtful, functional, healthy, and environmentally conscious spaces all the way from inside homes to the layouts and interior architecture of skyscrapers and commercial spaces.

#4. Theatre (Costume, Projection, or Sound concentrations)

Among the Theatre major’s versatile creative concentrations, you find three that depend heavily on technology and tech-capable students. Whether you hope to contribute to the razzle dazzle via Costume Design and Technology, Lighting Design and Technology, or Sound Design and Technology, you’re sure to test your skills in both tech/equipment and creativity. In all three concentrations, you’ll explore techniques in drafting, virtual reality, content creation, video, and application of emerging technologies to help in the creation and production of a performance.
