6 things you should know before college
College is different than high school. Keep these things in mind while preparing to come to Colorado State University.
If the sun on your shoulders and designing beautiful outdoor spaces sounds like paradise to you, you’ll love Environmental Horticulture.
When you major in Environmental Horticulture, you’ll be moved by the earth’s rhythms and seasons much more than the 9-5. Environmental horticulturists create aesthetically pleasing, functional, and environmentally sound outdoor spaces. They design landscapes like golf courses, botanical gardens, and parks, and manage landscape design firms. In this major, you’ll round out your passion for plants with science- and business-based courses, and choose a concentration to focus on.

A concentration allows you to specialize in a certain area within your major, offering a depth of information and hands-on experiences that you may not otherwise get. Many students in this major will concentrate in one area to work in a specific field after college, as well as find mentors and internships before they even graduate.
You’ll focus on landscape plant culture and use skills needed to start and manage a nursery, garden center, arboriculture, or landscape management firm.
As a graduate of the Environmental Horticulture major, you’ll find career opportunities in a multitude of fields in the green industry. Emerging demand for environmental solutions and green technologies will position you for careers in a wide variety of areas that include planning, design, and a variety of day-to-day work that suits those who want an “outdoor office”.
