Majoring in Fermentation and Food Science will give you a strong interdisciplinary science background with learning focused on the safety, culinary, and nutritional attributes of food while preparing you for abundant career options in food and beverage production, research, and more. Fermentation Science will build your practical understanding of fermented food and beverage production methods with local hands-on brewing and fermenting. Food science explores the physical, biological and chemical makeup of food to improve the safety, nutrition and availability of food.

A concentration allows you to specialize in a certain area within your major, offering a depth of information and hands-on experiences that you may not otherwise get. Many students in this major will concentrate in one area to work in a specific field after college, as well as find mentors and internships before they even graduate.
Explore fermented food and beverages through experiential learning. In the Fermentation Science and Technology concentration, you will take courses in applied food fermentation, sensory analysis, brewing science and operations management – and then test what you’re learning in real-world settings.
From classrooms to labs, you will gain a strong scientific understanding of the science of food with courses in food chemistry, food safety, food microbiology, and nutrition.
Prepare for abundant opportunities in the largest industry in the world, – food – where fermentation and food science are evolving rapidly. Hands-on learning in the local fermentation and food science industries will broaden your experience, along with internships to get you connected for future jobs. Prepare for employment in product development, processing, quality assurance and control, sensory evaluation, packaging, distribution, plant management, and research in the food industry, government and private sector or advanced degrees.
