A concentration allows you to specialize in a certain area within your major, offering a depth of information and hands-on experiences that you may not otherwise get. Many students in this major will concentrate in one area to work in a specific field after college, as well as find mentors and internships before they even graduate.
If you plan to teach Family and Consumer Sciences at the middle school, junior high, high school, or post–secondary levels, you’ll want to complete the education concentration. You’ll apply for the licensure program in your third year and participate in student teaching, working closely with classroom teachers and students in local schools.
The interdisciplinary concentration provides you with a focus on consumer and family well-being, growth and development of family members, and the relationship of households to their environment. You’ll prepare for careers in consumer program development, product design, consumer information, entrepreneurship, government, community, and nonprofit work, among others.
You’ll graduate with an interdisciplinary perspective about the challenges encountered by families and consumers in today’s world. You’ll get opportunities in a wide variety of fields, from education to health and wellness to international human services and beyond. These are just a few of the careers you may pursue with this degree.
